The Walkalon Manufacture Betsy Walker doll (was Pronounced "Walkalong" but spelled as "Walkalon") is to me, by far the "best doll" of the Metal mechanical windup walking dolls that was ever produced by either company from 1950-1956. These dolls were produced only a short time from 1950-1952. They were made like an iron workhorse. I would have hated to get little Sally mad and she threw the doll at me. All the steel they had used in the framework was this and heavy up until the last part of 1952 on which they were made with thinner metal. These dolls were made with a plastic called "Tenite Plastic". It was developed in 1929 by Eastman Chemical Company and was trademarked in 1932. Tenite Cellulosicthermoplastic has been used for a wide veriety of consumer, industrial, architectural and medical applications. Tenite Cellulosics are manufactured from renewable raw materials (soft woods). They exhibit many of the same tactile and finish properties as wood, yet can be easily molded or extruded. There was only 2 generations produced. First one had rubber sleeves on her feet that looked like leftover garden hose. The second used aluminum rollers under the car-like chassis covered with oil cloth. The dresses were available in three colors and all the same design. Yellow, white or pink adorned with a wide white sash that read "Betsy Walker - the walking doll - she walks alone". Atop her head was the same colored bonnets to match the dress. Under the dress was usually a white full length skirt over a pair of rubber pants, made from koroseal by Warrens Three Oaks (in Michigan 1950's)
